Well after a shop on the Wednesday before the holiday I had bought myself two new pairs of jeans which had the waist size to take me into the next generation along with a pair of polarised sun glasses that I had decided I now needed after not having any since losing a pair on a fishing trip.

This year despite only living 30 miles from Luton we ended up travelling to Gatwick as the Thomson package for the same holiday was £300 cheaper flying from Gatwick. Why was that one would ask, well the flight from Gatwick was a good time of 9:40am but I didn’t notice the same plane that would normally take us home was disappearing elsewhere and Thomson was then bringing in another plane from Lapland to take us home at 21:20pm but a £600 saving was a no brainer for us and the Thomson rep said it was the last sea view room.

This is how the holiday went.

Sunday Day 1

We arrived at Gatwick in plenty of time and joined the long winding queue which also contained my ex hairdresser. “Hi Delboy” she said, “What are you doing here”. Brief conversations took place as our paths crossed every ten minutes in the lanes and we were both going to Lanzarote.

Having checked in we headed for security and Gatwick had now a new system in place and new technology and Delboy never seem to work.

I was faced with a gate with a red light beaming across the opening. All I had to do was to put a bar code over a screen and which ever way I place it on the screen that red light just kept glaring at me. In the end an assistant had to come over and it worked for her first time and the light changed to green.

See us mature people need real people not machines. Next was the screening of hand luggage and Gatwick now has a luggage security system which looks like scene out of 'Thomas the tank engine' book with points and sidings which the 'Fat Controller' can change at any time.

There is platform area and one is guided to a vacant numbered space which even has feet marks printed on the floor to stand on.

I took my belt off putting it in the tray along with the bag, then I placed the tray on the track and watched it disappear down the track. I was now left holding my new jeans that could have easily dropped to the floor without a belt.

I was then beckoned through the screen and the alarm went off and in the distance I could hear my poor wallet crying down the track. I was led into a glass isolation chamber to be scanned. “Legs apart, arms up”, said the security man which did help a bit to hold my trousers up whilst my skeleton was lit before being allowed to go free but now somewhat disorientated with all these new luggage tracks.

However, Mrs Db was on the scene to grab my tray, only to see her tray switch to a different track.  As I reached her and started to put my belt on, Mrs Db was told her tray had been switched for further investigation. Another security man called out “who owns this tray”. “Me”, said Mrs Db “is there something wrong?” “We just want to check your tablets”, said the man. “Yes I have quite a bit of medication these days”, said Mrs Db. There was a grin breaking from the stern security man's face who said, “No your medication is fine Mrs Db” but then pulled out an old Kindle and my Tesco Ipad, these he said, they were then wiped with an explosives swab. He said “to avoid it happening next time best leave them out on the tray.

Now I think the holiday may be starting lol

so now down at Gate 46 in the North Terminal we began to board the plane

Image
p1220805

Quite a clear sky

Image
p1220807a

soon passing the Isle of Wight, the island on the left of the picture

Image
p1220812

We both picked a toasted sandwich

Image
p1220809

but they don't seem to keep a very good texture being heated up and go all moist

Image
p1120815

after just under 4 hours, unusually we were coming into Arrecife from the opposite direction probably due to the wind.

Image
p1220818a

so just after 2pm we had landed

Image
p1220820

There is a new small duty free shop in the arrival that I hadn't noticed before

Image
p1220819

Everyone was now waiting at the carousel for it to start

Image
p1220824

After getting the luggage off fairly quickly, the same as last year the Thomson rep told us to go upstairs to get coach details from other reps now based up there. where we were told to get on the coach in bay 14 and here we are now on the coach at 2:18pm

Image
p1220825

and at 2:41pm were were away

Image
p1220826

The bad news was that we were stopping at Puerto Del Carmen

Image
p1220827

Puerto Calero

Image
p1220830

before going on to Playa Blanca and after drop offs at the Lanzarote Princess and Cay Beach we finally arrived at Pueblo Marinero at 3:39pm

Image
p1220835

as it was a bit late to have lunch we decided to make do and have some toast until the evening and Mrs Db sent me to get the shopping

Image
p1120836

and the prices from the Hiperdino Express, this year we had brought our own coffee, tea and cereal.

I didn't order Vodka Caramel said Mrs Db?

Image
p1220837

and my reward lol

Image
p1220838

no real sunset tonight

Image
p1220843

Image
p1220844

but always on the front looking for that right moment

Image
p1220860

tonight we decided to go to Cervante's on the High St opposite the white church

p1220876

We decide to have the fillet steak Cervantes for two, so Mrs Db's meal was the same as mine

Image
p1220877a

And a free chocolate and caramel vodka to finish

Image
p1220879

a Lovely meal

Whilst we were walking back there was a small display of fireworks but I guess not for any celebration of us going back to PB lol

End of day one

Monday Day 2

Well after a good nights sleep, I was awake around 8am and I think it had rained during the night making it difficult for us to decide what it was going to do weatherwise

Image
p1120893

but by 11am the sun was out and Mrs Db was going to sit around the pool

Image
p1220894

whilst I had a look at what was new in the shopping centre that had opened last year

Plus Cars have a new office on the front of it now

Image
p1220895

The sports store is still there

Image
p1220896

A women's designer shop has opened called Punt Roma

Image
p1220898

Image
p1220897

Springfield's is still there

Image
p1220899

Another new one is Naracamicia

Image
p1220900

Just a view from the top of the Centre

Image
p1220901

Image
p1220902

The Hiperdino Express is still there but remember this one closes at 10pm whereas the one in the marina itself closes at 11pm

Image
p1220903

Encuentro also a new store in this year

Image
p1220904

Of course Fund Grube are still there with another branch just across the street

Image
p1220905

Another new one is Women' Secret

Image
p1220906

Damien Bakery outside is still there

Image
p1220908

another new Ladies shop on the outside of the centre is Koala Day

Image
p1230343

So I think downstairs is fairly complete now with the upstairs needing to attract others and start filling up

The mini golf outside the centre all seems complete but not seen anybody playing on it yet

Image
p1220907

Not more than 100m away from the centre there is a tennis court which looks very good but not sure who would be hiring it out maybe the Rubimar

Image
p1220910

Image
p1220911

so now going over to the marina, I'm now always looking for unusual shots to take and this wooden bridge fascinates me. You can just see some of the fish as the guy in the middle of the bridge is feeding them

Image
p1220912b

Image
p1220916

Image
p1220917

At the end of the bridge towards Lani's there is a new fashion store called Ferrer

Image
p1220919

Image
p1220920

Image
p1220923

At the corner of Lani's is Berrugo's which also seems popular but will try and visit there to see it for myself

Image
p1220921

The prices of the swimming pool available to all in the marina have now doubled and adults are 10€s and children 5€s so a bit of a hike from 5€s & 2€s from last year

Image
p1220924

Image
p1220925

I have booked a table for this evening in Blue Notes restaurant as last year we were disappointed one night that they were full

Image
p1220937

another shop in the marina I can't recall being there last year is this one

Image
p1220929

For lunch we went to Lani's snack bar

Image
p1220948

the menu

Image
p1220949

I had a bacon sandwich

Image
p1220950

Mrs Db had a tuna baguette

Image
p1220951

afterwards playing around with the camera I must try this shot on a sunny day lol

Image
p1220958

which was sitting inside the fan water pump

Image
p1220960

Freddy's cat houses are doing well this year, run by a guy who cares for the cats on Lanzarote

Imagep1220965

no sunset worth photographing tonight

We didn't need to book Blue Notes as there was only a few people behind me sitting in the front part for dinner

Image
p1220971

the wine list

Image
p1220972

menu

Image
p12209773

Image
p1220974

I had the rack of lamb again which I really enjoyed last year

Image
p1220980

Mrs Db had the duck

Image
p1220981

and we had complimentary caramel vodkas to finish

a nice evening and the bar Vino Blanco looks attractive walking passed it

Image
p1220982

End of Day 2

Tuesday Day 3

It was a cloudy start to the day

Image
p1220983

but a very clear day and Fuerteventura was easy to see

Image
p1220985

even the dunes were quite clear

Image
p1220986

We had a guy playing his flute but I don't think it was 'stranger on the shore' lol

Image
p1220989

So Mrs Db and I decided to go for a walk around town, the pitch and putt now gone

Image
p1220991

and the cafe next to it has become a cocktail bar. A bit exposed in the wind this time of the yesr and cocktails are 6.50€ each

Image
p1220992

nice flowers around

Image
p1220993

Gone are all the exercise training equipment above the beach

Image
p1220994

not many takers on the beach yet but still early

Image
p1220996

more flowers

Image
1220998

these are always colourful

Image
1230001

Fuerteventura in the distance the ARMAS ferry is in for maintenance and will not come back until the 10th December leaving the Fred Olsen or the very small boat to take you across.

Image
1230003

The service to Papagayo beaches seems to have ramped up this year, so I am going to investigate all the details on it later this is now the boat that seems dedicated to the run

Image
1230004

a lot more of these love padlocks on the chains this year

Image
1230006

Image
1230008

the start of the run of promenade shops and restaurants

Image
1230009

Image
1230010

Image
1230011

The town beach is replaced with more sand after any storms that wash it away

Image
1230013

Image
1230014

Gymnasium which you can workout on machines and weights charged by the hour or day

Image
1230015

Image
1230016

Image
1230017

Image
1230018

at this point Mrs Db and I cut into the town to see what changes were happening there

Image
1230019

Image
1230020

Image
1230021

Image
1230022

Image
1230023

at the very end on the left side there use to be a big tobacconist /spirit shop which has now closed and next to it is a new Mango fashion shop opening who obviously prefer staying in the town centre rather than the new marina shopping centre

Image
1230024

Image
1230025

Image
1230026

Image
1230027

Image

p1230033

Image
p1230034

Image
p1230035

This is a new Tourist Ticket place in the high St for excursions which was called 'Low Cost' last year so now they have two in the shopping centre, one in the harbour and one in the marina

Image
p1230046

Image
p1230047

Image
p1230048

so having got to the harbour end Mrs Db and I dropped down on the promenade to complete a circle of the restaurants

Image
p1230049

Image
p1230050

The German bakery and cafe where I believe they sell German beer

Image

Image
p1230075

Image
p1230076

and on the way back here is our old friend from last year

Image
p1230081

So back at the apartment the weather had improved and we were going across to Lani's snack bar to meet a TA couple that I had been corresponding with before the holiday

Image
p1230091

I could see a new rickshaw ride from our balcony and would check that out later

Image
p1230092

I explained to Anne & Barry I would wear a floppy blue hat as Mrs Db doesn't like me wearing my big straw hat in her company lol. We had a nice chat and a toastie each. It is always nice to meet people who chat on the forum. I did explain I was going to walk to a beauty spot which had been mentioned earlier on the forum, said to be beyond the abandoned hotel passed Faro Park. From there I was going to attempt to reach the salt pans (plains) to photograph the wind towers, hoping there may be more of their construction left than those that are in Playa Blanca marina area. It's a fair walk and wasn't quite sure whether I would get there but it was a target for this year.

Barry and Anne kindly offered to take us both there later in the holiday

Image
p1230095

Back at the apartment a tennis tournament was taking place

Image
p1230097

No sunset worth talking of tonight

Image
p1230101

Image
1230106a

Image
1230107a

house wine is 9.75€s a bottle

Nice evening

End of Day 3

Wednesday Day 4

I was up early for the sunrise which is around 7:40am at the moment but if you are lucky and get into position 30 minutes beforehand the sky can light up red. Unfortunately sunrises are like boxes of chocolates you never know which one you are going to get lol

I guess this would be coffee cream lol

Image
p1230118

This is where I go for sunrises and it takes me 8 minutes to get to it from my end of the marina. This is the Pirate watch tower built to safe guard the town against marauding pirates in the 1700's

Image
p1230119

This notice will tell you more about it

Image
p1230122b

And this is the peninsular it sits on at the end of the marina

Image
p1230120

I like these flowers that come in all kinds of colours

Image
p1230128

Image
p1230129

so down in the marina

Image
p1230131

It's Wednesday so the market stalls are being set up

Image
p1230133

Image
p1230135

Marina view from one of the restaurants

Image
p1230137

which does tapas

Image
p1230138

A local seems to carve various things from the rock but they have a shop on the marina itself selling them

Image
p1230142

back for breakfast and a nice morning on the balcony

Image
p1230148

and it's going to be a pool day for Mrs Db

Image
p1230150

However, I'm going to see the progress of the Lanzarote Park Hotel which has overrun its refurbishment

Image
p1230152

Passing a group of noisy people that maybe going to the market but they have coloured mops with them and may be a coach party with a guide lol

Image
p1230153

So heading in the direction of the town

Image
p1230156

I first wanted to look at the El Horno's menu as it has been said they are a good authentic restaurant and run by one of the brothers of Cervantes.

Their sucking pig is said to be good and I have never had it and not even sure what it is apart from being pig

Image
p1230161

The menu

Image
p1230162

I may try that lol

Image
p1230163

also people are always asking what baby milk formulas one can get in Lanzarote

Image
p1230176

So I photographed the Superdino shelves including nappies lol

Image
p1230179

Image
p1230180

Apparently Ferreteria is an ironmonger type shop in the side street next to the Superdino car park entrance and not many people know of it

Image
p1230182

A peep inside the shop

Image
p1230179

A restaurant in the harbour which I haven't been to called La Cofradia so can't comment on it

Then a burger in the apartment bar

Image
p1230269

The more sensible Mrs Db having a tuna baguette

Image
p1230270

Nice around the pool

Image
p1230271

with cocktail making and a free drink

Image
p1230276

I was desperate to photograph the cork flying, now how many tens of a second was that from the bang of the bottle

Image
p1230277

The comedy duo tip in the measures

Image
p1230279

A sort of sunset tonight

Image
p1230287

The new cocktail bar lit at night

Image
p1230297

as we pass it walking to town

Image
p1230298

At El Horno's we got the last table it was packed, we waited quite a time but everyone more or less got their meals at the same time so not too bad

I had the suckling pig which reminded me of the Sunday roast we had years ago with the crackling. I quite enjoyed it as it was something different

Image
p1230301

Mrs Db had the peppered steak and we were given a free drink of our choice afterwards, mine was a brandy lol

Image
p1230302

A group was on in the Jungle bar as we passed on the way back to the apartment

Image

End of Day 4

Thursday Day 5

Not too bad of a sunrise but not the cloud I am looking for lol

Image
p1230306

Sun beginning to come up the buoys and markers are where the sea museum is being created

Image
p1230330

Image
p1230334

Somebody asked where the Freedom shop is in the marina well it is at the top just below the Volcan hotel marina exit is.

Image
p1230340

Apparently they have some connection with donations for Freddy's cat houses but I think that is mentioned on FB

Image
p1230341

so today I am going over to Horseshoe bay for four reasons

Image
p1230344

one of the reasons is to see the new Hiperdino express which has taken the place of Ropers which have now sold out

Image
p1230345

The next thing is somebody said the rough terrain over the Papagayo beaches has been improved with a new pathway

Image
p1230346

The third thing is to see the water bus drop off the people and photograph the event

and the fourth to find out more about the water wells said to have been dug by the Normans during their landings

Image
p1230347

so going passed the Dream Castillo there is a new cafe place

Image
p1230348

So at the new Hiperdino now, notice they close at 10pm

Image
p1230351

so a quick browse around and to buy a bottle of water as there are no facilities until Horseshoe Bay and they will surely be expensive

Image
p1230352

Image
p1230353

Image
p1230354

Image
p1230355

Image
p1230356

There is a children's play area by the Hiperdino

Image
p1230357

But heading passed the Sandos Papagayo Hotel to get to the entrance of the pathway to the beaches

Image
p1230359

The pathway

Image
p1230360

It's best to go up to the side of the Sandos Papagayo Hotel on the right of the picture

Image
p1230361

I followed this couple

Image
p1230365

But I think I turned off left too early

Image
p1230366

heading for this marker but realised I had gone just too far to get down to the beach safely and needed to be on that pathway in the distance around that gully behind me

Image
p1230367

But no problems one can't get lost with the sea nearby lol

Image
p1230368

The beach and the car park are below

Image
p1230370

So the pathway down hasn't changed at all

Image
p1230372

And now back on track following this couple going down

Image
p1230376

and the pathway is now obvious

Image
p1230377

however, I now seem to be in a rush again as I need to get to Horseshoe Bay to meet up with the arrival of water bus

Image
p1230378

I'll check out this building on the way back

Image
p1230380

So now crossing the beach at a fast pace

Image
p1230381

Then taking the pathway to the next beach which is quite straight forward

Image
p1230383

but up at the top I can see the water bus has just left the marina

Image
p1230384

so i am going to have to get down and across the beach without hanging around

Image
p1230385

waves look a bit rough down there lol

Image
p1230386

Image
p1230387

Now these could be the wells that have been talked about but didn't have the time to look at them two years ago and now I still don't have the time so will investigate them on my way back

Image
p1230388

so rapidly going across the second beach

Image
p1230389

I'm now faced with two paths, two years ago I took the inner one but this year I'm going to take the one next to the sea to keep and eye on the water bus

Image
p1230390

well that route was a bit more hairy right on the cliff edge and a bit more terrain ahead to deal with

Image
p1230391

but only one bay away from the Horseshoe. Now this was the new improved pathway the person was talking of but it only helps if you have a car to get to this point and no help from Playa Blanca itself

Image
p1230392

I can see the boat around the first beach but there is no landing going on so far

Image
p1230394

but now I am in a position to see all beaches

Image
p1230395

a new rails and steps down to Horseshoe Bay

Image
p1230397

There is a restaurant bar over looking the bay

Image
p1230398

so going down the steps to the beach

Image
p1230399

Image
p1230400

Two year ago from the top I noticed a cave below on the end of the beach so now I'm going down to have a look at it

Image
p1230402

but it's only small and not much of interest

Image
p1230404

so at last the arrival of the water bus

Image
p1230405

But there is no speed boat here, so clearly it's not stopping today it may be too rough.

Image
p1230406

So not good value for 15€s today and disappointing for me not to be able to show you how they do it

Image
p1230408

So going up to the top again for the views

Image
p1230410

Image
p1230411

Image
p1230414

Image
p1230416

Image
p1230419

Image
p1230422

Image
p1230429

The car park

Image
p1230430

the remains of one of two isolated stone dwellings

Image
p1230432

Image
p1230434

inside the bar with a view over the bay

Image
p1230435

steps going down to the other beach

Image
p1230437

The beach

Image
p1230441

Image
p1230443

having gone back up the steps I am going down a gully to get to the next bay

Image
p1230447

but I need to go right up the embankment else I am going to end up back in the same bay

Image
p1230448

Image
p1230449

so eventually I get to the top

Image
p1230457

Image
p1230459

some birds happy to sit on the rocks as I crept nearer to them

Image
p1230462

I could probably improve this photograph

Image
p1230466

Image
p1230469

big waves

Image
p1230471

I guess this is why they decided not to land the passengers today

Image
p1230472

a rocky area with the tide out

Image
p1230473

These are definitely the wells on Papagayo beaches, some have large cages around them and others near to them are smaller

Image
p1230474

This is the smaller sized one

Image
p1230477

and if I stick my camera down you can just see water at the bottom

Image
p1230475

The bigger one seem to have an angled stairwell

Image
p1230479

which all becomes clear when reading these notices, I guess slaves were sent down there to get the water rather than getting a bucket full from the top. Officials are not totally sure whether they were made before the Norman landings

Image
p1230480

There are said to be etchings on the wall depicting Tanit the Goddess of heavens and stars origins came from Tunisia but of course those etchings could have been made many years after the wells had been completed

Image
p1230484a

so moving on, I like this shot but won't zoom in any closer lol

Image
p1230485

now back to the first beach

Image
p1230489

Image
p1230491

I couldn't find information on this dwelling other than it is a preserved monument

Image

so now it's back to Mrs Db

Image
p1230506

I had a bacon baguette for a change where as Mrs Db stuck to her tuna baguette. The afternoon was at the pool where water polo was taking place but i'm not going in the water lol

Image
p1230507

There was a good sunset and one of the stone idol makers had left some up, so always wanted to get this sort of shot

Image
p1230515

Image
p1230528

tonight we went back to Cervante's

Image
p1230529

I had the steak with fua reduction which came with veg and chips which was very tasty

Image
p1230530

Mrs Db had the steak with Roquefort sauce

Image
p1230532

End of Day 5

Friday Day 6

Well I overslept and looking out my apartment door it looked like the sunrise could be the strawberry cream in the box of chocolates this morning. I'm going to have to set the alarm tomorrow morning lol

Image
p1230533

Reasonable morning from the balcony

Image
p1230535

I noticed a rickshaw going by so thought I would pop out and find out the details

Image
p1230536

Another rickshaw was on standby so the guy posed for me lol

Image
p1230537

well the cost is 6€'s per couple but that only takes you to town, further stops cost more money

Image
p1230538

These are the stops and some of the costs

Image
p1230539

It was a quiet day by the pool for us after yesterday and the entertainments guy had a day off

Image
p1230541

Lunchtime we went over to the marina to have lunch at Casa Brigida

Image
p1230542

Mrs Db had and omelette

Image
p1230543

I had a fry up but no sausage

Image
p1230544

The menu

Image
p1230545

The afternoon was much of the same

Image
p1230547a

As i went out for the sunset a guy on a stick was outside and made a good photograph

Image
p1230552

I wanted to fade the background to get rid of the distraction  but my camera isn't clever enough without getting even closer lol

Image
p1230559

Sunset

Image
p1230571

for the evening we popped over to Lani's

Image
p1230573

menu

Image
p1230574

Image

Mrs Db had taccos

Image

I had the beef burrittos but they were only warm and had to be reheated for me

Image

End of day 6

Saturday Day 7

So this morning I set the alarm for 7 am but of course my brain knows that and wakes me well before 6 am so it's a cup of tea in bed with Mrs Db having a light on to read the Kindle.

Image
p1230582

So down at the Pirate tower around 7 am, this is the sort of cloud i'm looking for

Image
p1230584

here the cloud colour is starting to change

Image
p1230590

Image
p1230593

Image
p1230595

The Pirate Tower with a good background of colour

Image
p1230596

you can probably image I am rattling off a few pictures now

Image
p1230596

Image
p1230601

Image
p1230613

Image
p1230622

Image
p1230624

you can see one doesn't get too long and the red colour begins to fade

Image
p1230626

and now the sun rises about 7:40am

Image
p1230632

Image
p1230633

So down at the end of the marina I wondered if there were any statues ready for the sea museum. Apparently people have paid money to have a statue made in their image and perhaps this could be Delboy but it would need a straw hat and a little more concrete around the waist lol.

Image
p1230648

Not sure whether these people paid enough to be part of the museum lol. However, Delboy discovers more on all this later as it is not as it looks of a  nightmare on Elm st massacre

Image
p1230649

Being Saturday it is market day again

Image
p1230655

Image
p1230658

again in daylight this is cloud that gives a good dawn sky

Image
p123669

so just to give you a flavour of the market

Image
p1230681

Image
p1230684

Image
p1230685

colourful dolls again

Image
p1230686

and pebbles cut making attractive patterns but not sure how you would get them home as they would weigh quite a bit

Image
p1230693

colourful beads

Image
p1230695

This lady has a stall of reading glasses should you forget to take them with you. I managed to get a sunglasses string to take them off when taking photographs as I get a totally different image to the camera whilst wearing them

Image
p1230698

now do i want that bag lol

Image
p1230701

five heads are better than one

Image
p1230702

today it is nice around the pool

Image
p1230709

but instructions were being give on how to play bowls

Image
p1230710

But I still lost again

Image
p1230715

an afternoon around the pool

Image

and a nice sunset

Image
p1230735a

this evening we are going to the Spice Fusion in the Papagayo Commercial Centre

the menu
Image
p1230744a

Image
p1230745a

Image
p1230746a

Image
p1230747a

Image
p1230748a

We had free poppadoms and three sauce dips to try, one was quite hot lol

Image
p1230749a

I had the Lamb Rogan Josh and Mrs Db had the Pasandia no 48

Image
p1230750a

We shared the nan bread and rice and there was plenty for us

Image
p1230751a

My Lamb dish

Image
p1230752a

Mrs Db Dish and we both given a choice of free drinks, so we had a Bailey's. They were very nice staff and food was excellent

Image
p1230753a

and a new little dance floor in a bar in the centre, come on Delboy you're too late 'strictly' is finished tomorrow

Image
p1230754
